  • Vintage: 1988
  • Details: This is a beautiful porcelain Swan planter in a matte bisque finish that's sure to bring complements.  The detail on this piece is excellent with each feather very well defined.  The face on the swan is sweet, looks as graceful and regal as the real swans.  The bottom is stamped: "F.T.D.A., Made in Taiwan".  It retains its original paper sticker that reads: "FDTA 1988".  There are so many great uses for this planter, because it doesn't have a drainage hole it can also be used as a vase or cachepot, candy dish or to store small items.  It is an FTD collectible planter, beautiful addition for a sunroom or patio.  Perhaps in a guest bath with folded hand towels or anywhere with a real or faux plant inside.  Would make a great hostess or get-well gift with a pretty plant.  Great decor for wedding, bridal shower or baby shower!

FTDA, known as 'Florists Telegraph Delivery Association' (FTDA aka FTD) was founded in 1910 when a group of 13 American retail florists agreed to exchange orders for out-of-town deliveries. They began telegraphing orders to each other from different states because flowers didn't always last the long train trips required for delivery in far away places. The gold Mercury Man logo was first used by FTD in 1914, he is known as the god “Hermes” , messenger to Zeus.  He is also referred to as the Roman god, “Mercury” who traveled extensively, delivering important mail from one sender to another.  In 1923 a British unit of FTD was formed in response to the success of the network in America.  In 1946 International Telegraph Florists was established between FTD, the FTD British Unit and Europe's floral clearinghouse Fleurop, they became "Interflora".  By 1965, they expanded to include international transactions, and the company was renamed “Florists’ Transworld Delivery”, to reflect its growing worldwide presence and its partnership with Interflora.   Today they have grown to be the largest flower delivery network, associated with over 58,000 affiliated flower shops in over 140 countries.   Interflora is now a subsidiary of FTD Companies, acquired in 2006.
